Alex Golesh's Perseverance Pays Off: WR DeShawn Spencer Commits to Auburn
Alex Golesh, the head coach of USF, has been relentless in his pursuit of top talent, and his efforts have finally paid off. For months, Golesh had been recruiting DeShawn Spencer, a dynamic playmaker from Saraland, Alabama, as if he were the most crucial piece of his offensive puzzle.
But Spencer had other plans. Before publicly committing to Duke, Spencer was actually a silent commit to USF, with an announcement date already set. Golesh and his staff were prepared for the big reveal, only to be met with a delay. Spencer took his time, ultimately choosing to play for Duke instead.
However, Golesh's determination never wavered. He continued to recruit Spencer, emphasizing the genuine connection and relationship-building that had already taken place.
"They were pushing me to flip during the season," Spencer revealed. "USF never gave up. Coach Golesh and his staff felt very genuine, and they were always recruiting me and wanting me to visit."
This foundation of trust and consistency proved to be the turning point. Spencer's visit to Auburn, where Golesh was officially named head coach, solidified his decision. The moment Golesh secured the job, he wasted no time in reaching out to Spencer once more.
And this time, Spencer committed to Auburn. "I am going to Auburn," Spencer stated. "Coach Golesh has always made me feel at home, and I have always liked Auburn."
The decision makes perfect sense for Spencer. Auburn is close to home, boasts an exceptional atmosphere, and provides an opportunity to play for a renowned coach and a school in his home state, surrounded by familiar faces.
"Auburn is close to home, and the atmosphere is one of the best," Spencer explained. "Going to Auburn gives me a chance to play for a great coach, attend a school in my home state, and be around people I feel comfortable with."
