The deal, finalized on Tuesday, involves the Jets receiving a 2026 second-round pick and a 2027 first-round pick from the Cowboys. As part of the exchange, the Jets also welcome defensive tackle Mazi Smith, a former first-round pick from 2023. This trade signifies a significant shift for both teams.
Williams, a rare success story for the Jets' recent first-round picks, had secured an extension before his rookie contract ended, setting a positive trend followed by players like Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Jets also traded Gardner, gaining two first-round picks in return. The price for Williams includes a 2026 second-round pick and a 2027 first-round pick.
Williams' tenure with the Jets was marked by losing seasons, which seemingly took a toll on him. He even expressed his frustration on social media and privately, revealing his unhappiness and desire for a trade. Initially, the Jets seemed reluctant, but as the trade deadline approached, they changed their stance.
The trade provides the Jets with valuable draft capital and future cap savings. However, it also creates a leadership and talent void on defense, particularly on the defensive line.
Williams' performance this season saw a dip in numbers, partially due to facing constant double- and triple-teams. Despite this, Pro Football Focus still ranked him as the seventh-best defensive tackle overall and first in run defense. He's also first among all defensive tackles in run play tackling. He earned three consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2022 to 2024 and was an All-Pro in 2022.
The Jets will now rely on Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs at defensive tackle. The trade is expected to save the Jets approximately $8 million in salary for 2025 and even more in subsequent years. Williams was only guaranteed $5 million of his $20.75 million salary in 2026, with no guaranteed money in 2027.
