UBL's Life-Saving Initiative: Training Boda Boda Riders for Safer Roads (2025)

A bold initiative to tackle a critical issue: Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) is taking a stand against the alarming rise in motorcycle-related fatalities and injuries. With a mission to create a safer Uganda, UBL has embarked on a journey to empower over 150 Boda Boda operators in Luzira, Kampala, with the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves and others on the road.

But here's where it gets controversial: despite the efforts of law enforcement and private sector partnerships, motorcycle accidents remain the greatest threat to road safety in Uganda. The numbers are staggering, with a 13.2% increase in motorcyclist fatalities in 2024 compared to the previous year. Including passengers, motorcycle-related deaths accounted for nearly half of all road traffic fatalities in the country.

The economic impact is devastating, with an estimated annual cost of road crashes reaching shs4.4 trillion (USD 1.2 billion), equivalent to a significant portion of Uganda's GDP.

So, what's being done to address this crisis? UBL's Safety Awareness Week initiative is a crucial step forward. By providing comprehensive road safety training and essential protective gear, UBL is equipping Boda Boda operators with the means to improve their visibility and safety during their daily operations.

The training covered a range of vital topics, from defensive riding techniques to proper use of safety gear, traffic sign recognition, and safe overtaking procedures. Each rider received a helmet and a high-visibility reflector jacket, proven to reduce fatality rates in motorcycle accidents.

Anthony Alozie, UBL's Supply Chain Director, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Health and safety are fundamental human rights. Our 'Doing Business the Right Way from Grain to Glass' pillar aligns with our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) agenda, and we believe this initiative will contribute to reversing the troubling upward trend in motorcycle fatalities."

UBL's commitment to safety doesn't stop there. The brewery has fostered a robust safety culture internally, earning multiple recognitions in the manufacturing sector. Alozie highlighted their strict regulations around alcohol consumption, even for an alcohol company, to ensure workplace safety.

AIGP Lawrence Niwabiine, Director of Traffic and Road Safety in the Uganda Police Force, praised UBL's intervention, calling for more corporate organizations to join the fight against road carnage.

Hakim Wanswadhee, a Boda Boda cyclist, expressed gratitude for the training and support, acknowledging the risks they now understand and the importance of road safety for their own benefit, their passengers, and their families' future.

This Boda Boda road safety initiative is just one part of UBL's broader commitment to promoting a culture of safety among its employees and the wider community. With motorcyclists and their passengers making up a significant portion of road deaths, UBL's intervention is a crucial step towards saving lives and supporting the livelihoods of Boda Boda operators.

What do you think? Is this initiative enough to tackle the road safety crisis in Uganda? Share your thoughts and let's spark a conversation on this important issue.
